Sukhothai ancient city

We spent the morning at the Sukhothai ruins, a kingdom that flourished in the 13th and 14th centuries. Rowan is back on track and enjoyed being driven around on a scooter by Kate who was wobbling everywhere (we decided we deserved a break from the tandem).

As we have a free afternoon we thought we would write a bit about the food situation. As per usual Rowan is eating like a horse to the amazement of many thais, who keep rushing over with more rice. Riding all day makes us increadibly hungry but luckely there are many road side stalls serving up all sorts of tasty curries and other thai dishes. The sellers are extremely friendly. At one stall we had a lesson in Thai etiquette - how to eat properly with a spoon and fork, how to crack eggs and pour them over rice. We also take a supply of fruit snacks and penut butter and honey sandwiches for snacking along the way.

Suprisingly, Thailand also has amazing coffee! To stem opium production the Thai authorities have promoted the 'coffee culture'. Now the highland farmers grow coffee instead of opium poppies and there are coffee shops everywhere - Mmm tasty.

Rowan has decided to theme his trip with bananna based treats. Things tried so far include: banana spring role, roti, shake, pancake, caramalised, deepfried, dried. He is on the hunt for more.

The next few days we will be getting some miles under our belt to get past Bangkok. Unfortunatly, 600km with only transit towns until we get to the next place with anything to see. Kate would like to be on the beach for christmas.

I am happy to be rid of that damn stomach bug, it is reall depressing to watch every one drinking and eating and not take part. I found my new favorite resturaunt (see pic), I wonder how many ways you can cook poo?
